WHEN STUDENTS TEACH STUDENTS

A school programme suggests that peer tutoring can help learners and tutors, but only when the support is carefully organised.

At Brookfield School, older students help younger pupils with reading and mathematics once a week. The programme began after teachers noticed some pupils needed more practice than lesson time allowed. It was not designed to replace teachers, but to add short, focused practice between lessons.

Before the first sessions, volunteer tutors receive training on how to ask guiding questions, give hints and wait for a learner to explain an answer. They are told not to complete work for the younger pupil. A teacher prepares the practice tasks and stays nearby so that difficult misunderstandings can be corrected quickly.

After one term, many younger pupils said they felt more comfortable asking a student to repeat an explanation. Tutors also reported benefits: explaining a method forced them to organise their own thinking more clearly. Teachers noticed that the strongest sessions involved conversation rather than the tutor simply showing the right answer.

The school now keeps sessions short and matches pupils with tutors who attend reliably. Staff also review progress every few weeks and change pairs when the match is not working. These routines show why peer tutoring works best as a structured addition to teaching, not as an informal replacement for it.
