MAKING VOLUNTEERING EASIER TO START

A youth project changed its structure after learning why some students did not stay.

When Eastfield Youth Volunteer Project began last year, organisers expected students to choose one cause and stay for a full term. Interest was high at first, but several teenagers stopped attending after two or three weekends. A short survey showed that many liked volunteering but did not understand each role before signing up.

Organisers responded by changing how students entered the programme. Instead of demanding an immediate term-long commitment, they introduced ninety-minute taster sessions at a library, food bank and park project. Each student received a role card listing the main tasks, and new volunteers were paired with someone who had already completed several sessions.

After these changes, regular attendance increased. Students helped younger children choose books, sorted donated food and recorded damaged signs in local parks. Feedback forms showed that many volunteers became more confident speaking to unfamiliar people and better at planning their time. However, some still found that a particular role did not suit them, so changing projects remained possible.

The project now measures success by whether students find a useful role they can continue, not by total hours completed. Next term, every new volunteer will try at least one taster session before choosing a longer placement.
