BUILDING AN APP BY LISTENING FIRST

Daniyar’s school-app project changed each time he watched real students try to use it.

When Daniyar noticed students missing homework deadlines and room changes, he blamed the amount of information posted around school. Notices appeared on doors, in group chats and on web pages. For a technology project, he decided to design a school app that would collect useful updates in one place.

Before writing code, Daniyar interviewed students from different year groups. They wanted reminders, but they did not want another app sending constant notifications. Teachers asked him to avoid copying documents into the system. These conversations changed his plan: the app would show summaries and let users choose which categories they followed.

His first version looked tidy but failed a test. During a trial, several younger students could not find the timetable-change button quickly. Daniyar moved the button to the home screen, increased the text size and asked the same students to test it again. Their second attempt was faster.

The project taught Daniyar that useful technology depends on listening as much as coding. He still hopes to add a map of school rooms, but only after a round of student feedback. His goal is not to place every school message inside one app; it is to make information easier to find.
