WHEN A SAFE ROUTE IS MORE THAN A LINE ON A MAP

Digital evidence can reveal risky points, but safer cycling routes still depend on local experience.

Why do some people avoid cycling even when the journey is short? For many riders, the problem is not distance but whether the route feels safe. A painted bicycle symbol may help, yet it cannot remove every risky crossing or fast-moving section of road.

Transport planners use digital tools to study these problems before changing a street. Small traffic counters record how many bicycles and cars pass at times, while mapping software shows where crashes or sudden braking happen most often. Planners can then compare several routes instead of relying only on impressions.

In one town, engineers tested a proposed school cycle route in a computer model. The first version used the shortest streets, but the model showed that students would cross a busy road twice. A slightly longer option connected two quieter streets and required only one controlled crossing. The town chose that design and added temporary barriers for a trial month.

Technology does not decide everything. Planners still need comments from riders, parents and residents because a map cannot fully show how a place feels at school-opening time or after dark. Used together, digital evidence and local experience can help create routes that are both practical and safer.
