NORTHGATE LIBRARY: AFTER THE RENOVATION

How one neighbourhood library changed without losing its original purpose.

For almost forty years, Northgate Library was mainly a quiet place to borrow books and study. By 2025, more people were using it, but the old building had too few study spaces. The council planned a renovation to add new learning facilities without losing the quiet reading area.

Work began on 20 January, and the library closed completely for eight weeks. It reopened on 18 March with 68 study seats, up from 42. There were also 12 computers and a workshop room for groups of up to 24 people.

The changes were not only about space. Volunteer tutors now give homework help on three afternoons a week, and local groups can use the workshop room for free educational sessions. The front reading area is still a silent zone for visitors who prefer traditional library space.

In the first six months after reopening, membership rose by 18 percent and attendance at learning activities more than doubled. Manager Leila Omar says the figures show that residents are using the library in more ways than before. She believes the renovation worked because it added new opportunities while keeping the quiet space people valued.
