MORE THAN A PLACE FOR BOOKS

A local library expands its role while protecting the quiet space that existing users still value.

A few years ago, the Westbrook Library was mainly a place to borrow books and study quietly. Visitor numbers were falling, especially after school, so staff asked local families what would make the building more useful.

The answer was not to remove books. Instead, one unused reading room became a small learning studio with movable tables, laptops and a projector. Volunteers now run homework sessions there twice a week, while local artists offer short workshops at weekends.

The changes attracted more teenagers and parents. This growth created a new problem, however: people attending group activities sometimes disturbed visitors who still wanted silence. Staff therefore moved the busiest sessions to the back of the building and added acoustic panels between the studio and the main reading area.

The library now serves several purposes at once. It remains a place for borrowing and quiet study, but it also hosts coding clubs, language exchanges and practical classes. A booking system also helps staff prevent activities from using every shared space. The project worked because the team did not treat old and new uses as competitors. Instead, they adjusted the building so that different kinds of learning could happen without one replacing the other.
