THE WAREHOUSE THAT KEPT ITS SCARS

Restoration can protect a building without making its past disappear.

At the edge of Millford stands a brick railway warehouse built in 1896, when trains carried grain through the town. After freight traffic moved elsewhere, the building stood empty for decades, and part of its roof began to fail. In 2023, the town council approved a plan to turn it into a community arts hall while keeping its historic character.

At first, some planners wanted to clean every wall until the bricks looked almost new. However, inspection revealed old loading numbers, faded signs and repaired cracks that showed how the warehouse had changed. The restoration team therefore kept several of these marks visible. The goal was not to make the building look as if time had never touched it; it was to make the old structure safe without erasing its story.

Safety created a different challenge. Several original roof beams were too weak to support modern lighting and sound equipment. New steel supports were added behind the timber, where visitors would barely notice them. Even so, the team reused sound sections of the old wood in doors, benches and display frames. This met present-day standards while still showing materials from the building’s working past.

The arts hall reopened in spring 2025 with studios, a small stage and an exhibition about local railway workers. Visitors now use a building that is modern in function but still carries visible evidence of its earlier life. For the project team, successful restoration meant balancing those two truths rather than choosing one over the other.
