SECOND LIFE FOR OLD SKATEBOARDS

A teenager turned damaged skateboard decks into a small reuse project after his first idea proved unsafe.

Paragraph A

Fourteen-year-old Arman thought about waste after seeing broken skateboard decks beside a bin at his local skatepark. The colourful wood was still strong in places, so he wondered whether it could be useful again. His first idea was to combine old deck pieces into a new skateboard.

Paragraph B

A technology teacher warned him that hidden cracks and old screw holes could make a rebuilt board unsafe under a rider’s weight. Instead of abandoning the project, Arman changed what he made. He cut the strongest sections into phone stands and key racks, which did not need to carry a person.

Paragraph C

Arman posted photographs of the first pieces on the skatepark noticeboard. Soon afterwards, the park manager placed a labelled collection box near the entrance. Within two months, the box was filling every weekend, so Arman no longer had to ask friends to save boards for him.

Paragraph D

Arman now sells some items at school fairs and uses the money to buy blades and sandpaper. However, he says the project is still mainly about showing that a damaged object may contain useful material. He has not solved skateboard waste, but he has found one practical way to keep some material in use longer.
