WHY DO SOME ANIMALS ADAPT TO CITIES?

Some species become successful in cities not because urban life is easy, but because they can adjust how they find food, shelter and space.

Cities can look like difficult places for wild animals: roads divide habitats, artificial light changes the night, and natural food is often limited. Yet a small group of species becomes surprisingly common in urban areas. Their success usually depends less on cities being easy and more on the animals being flexible.

Foxes, for example, may travel later at night to avoid busy streets and use gardens, railway edges and waste ground as routes. Peregrine falcons can treat tall buildings like cliffs, nesting high above streets while hunting birds that already live in the city. These cases show how familiar needs such as shelter or hunting space can sometimes be met in unfamiliar places.

Food alone does not explain urban success. Animals that cope well in cities often alter more than one part of their behaviour: they may change feeding times, tolerate people at a shorter distance, or use several kinds of nesting site. This flexibility can give them an advantage over species that depend on one narrow food source or one type of habitat.

However, adaptation has limits. Some animals disappear from developed areas because traffic, noise or the loss of breeding places creates problems they cannot solve simply by changing behaviour. Urban success therefore does not prove that cities are better habitats; it shows that some species can use new conditions while others cannot.
