SATELLITES IN EVERYDAY LIFE

They are far above us, but many ordinary services depend on them.

Satellites orbit far above Earth, so it is easy to think they matter only to scientists. In fact, they support services people use every day, from finding a route to receiving storm warnings. Different satellites do different jobs, and many systems on the ground depend on the information they send.

Navigation satellites transmit precise time signals that phones, cars and ships use to calculate position. A device compares signals from several satellites, which is why accuracy can fall between tall buildings or inside tunnels. The same timing signals also help some banks and communication networks keep their systems synchronized.

Weather satellites watch clouds, temperatures and large storms. Geostationary satellites stay above the same part of Earth, so they can follow changes in one region continuously. Polar-orbiting satellites move over different parts of the planet on each pass, gradually building a wider picture.

Other satellites carry television, phone or internet signals to places where ground cables are difficult to install. Emergency beacons can also send a distress signal through satellites when a person is far from normal mobile coverage. Together, these examples show that satellites support ordinary life in several different ways, even when users rarely notice them.
