COUNT FIRST, CHANGE SECOND

A school waste project became more effective when students measured which single-use items the school could actually control.

The environmental team began with a five-day waste audit rather than announcing a general plastic ban. Students and caretakers counted single-use items and found three large streams: sports-hall drink cups, cafeteria plastic forks and wrappers from sealed snacks. The audit mattered because the school controlled each source differently.

The team targeted the first two streams immediately. A bottle-refill point was installed by the sports hall, with washable cups kept for events. In the cafeteria, metal cutlery replaced disposable forks, with return racks beside the tray station. Snack wrappers were not banned because most came from products supplied in sealed packaging by outside companies.

Four weeks later, a second audit showed that disposable cups and forks had fallen sharply, while wrapper numbers changed only slightly. Staff also checked for new problems: cup washing joined the normal kitchen cycle, and fewer than ten pieces of cutlery were missing after the trial. The project therefore reduced selected plastic without simply moving the problem elsewhere.

The smaller change in snack wrappers became the next question rather than a reason to call the project a failure. The school began asking suppliers whether popular snacks could arrive in larger containers for portioning on site. The main lesson was that measuring waste first made it possible to separate changes the school could make quickly from changes that required cooperation beyond the school gates.
