TESTING THE STREET BEFORE BUILDING THE LANE

Digital street models can compare route designs, but a short physical trial can reveal behaviour the model misses.

Choosing a safer cycling route is not simply a matter of drawing the shortest line between two places. Street width, parked vehicles, turning movements and visibility at side roads can all change how protected a route can be. Some planning teams now test these details digitally before they install any permanent lane.

One method begins with a mapping cart fitted with cameras and laser sensors. The system records lane width, kerb position, parked vehicles and visibility around corners. Software combines the measurements into a digital street model in which planners can test separator positions, cycle-lane widths and signal timing.

In a recent school-route project, the model compared two possible alignments. Amber was shorter but crossed more unsignalised side roads; Green was slightly longer and stayed beside a protected kerb for more of the journey. The team selected Green for a one-week trial using removable separators rather than building it immediately.

The street trial revealed something the model had not fully predicted: delivery vans regularly stopped close to one corner during the morning rush and reduced the view of approaching traffic. The loading bay was moved twenty metres and the cycle-lane entry was shifted before the final design was approved. Digital models can narrow the choices, but short physical trials still matter because real street behaviour can expose problems that measurements alone miss.
