HOW MIGRATORY BIRDS FIND THEIR WAY

Long-distance migrants do not depend on one perfect compass; they combine several sources of information.

Every spring and autumn, many birds travel hundreds or even thousands of kilometres between breeding and feeding areas. Research suggests that they do not follow a single navigation system; inherited direction and information from the environment work together.

Birds travelling in daylight can use the position of the sun, while an internal biological clock helps them allow for the sun’s movement across the sky. Some night migrants learn patterns in the stars and can use the way those patterns appear to turn during the night. Cloud cover may hide these sky cues, but that does not leave every migrant without direction.

Many species can also respond to Earth’s magnetic field, which can provide compass information when visual cues are weak. Experienced birds may add familiar coastlines, rivers, mountains or other landmarks to this system and use them to correct a route.

By comparing routes across weather, age and experience, researchers can see how birds switch between cues rather than testing one sense alone.
