A SECOND LIFE FOR THE OLD MARKET HALL

How one town preserved a landmark while making it useful again.

The Old Market Hall opened in 1884 and served the town for more than a century. After it closed in 2009, roof leaks made parts of the wooden interior unsafe. The council considered replacing it, but many residents wanted the familiar landmark to remain.

A survey found the stone outer walls and cast-iron columns still strong, while several timber roof beams and interior floors had weakened. The restoration team therefore kept the stone exterior and iron columns but removed the damaged timber and rebuilt the floors to modern safety standards.

The architects did not try to make every new feature look old. They used glass and steel for the new entrance and lift so visitors could clearly see the modern additions. At the same time, original bricks were reused inside, and old photographs helped workers repair the tall windows accurately.

The hall reopened as a community space with workshops, a café and rooms for local events. Restoring it cost more than putting up a basic new building, but the project reduced demolition waste and kept an important part of the town’s identity. It showed that an old building can keep its character while gaining a useful new role.
