WHY A REGULAR SLEEP ROUTINE HELPS

Why sleep timing can matter as well as the total number of hours.

Teenagers often hear that they should get enough sleep, but the timing of sleep matters as well as the total number of hours. Going to bed and waking up at very different times each day can make it harder for the body to know when to feel sleepy or alert.

During sleep, the brain organises information gathered during the day. This supports memory and learning. The body also uses this time for growth and repair. When sleep is cut short, students may find it more difficult to concentrate, control their mood or remember new material.

A regular schedule helps the body's internal clock predict when rest is coming. People who keep similar bedtimes and wake-up times often fall asleep more easily and feel more awake in the morning. Moving the schedule several hours later at weekends can make Monday morning feel like a small time-zone change.

No single bedtime habit solves every sleep problem. Dimming lights, putting screens away before bed and preparing school things earlier can help. However, these habits work best when they support a fairly consistent routine rather than one unusually early night followed by several late ones.
